Taika Waititi Had The Best Response To Those ‘Star Wars’ Rumors

For the past few years, new Star Wars films have been pretty plentiful. The three sequel films in the Skywalker saga came out between 2015 and 2019, and have sparked a new love for the franchise for a newer generation of fans. But the film aspect of Star Wars is going on a hiatus, according to Bob Iger. With fewer movies around the bend, it’s planning time for Lucasfilm. And new reports are saying Taika Waititi is being approached to develop one of the films. His response? Classic Waititi.

Reliable sources say Disney/Lucasfilm is scouting Taika Waititi for ‘Star Wars’

Again, even though Star Wars films aren’t going to happen as often as they have in the past five years, plans are always in the works. There’s still hope that more Rian Johnson Star Wars films happen, and last year Kathleen Kennedy revealed Kevin Feige is developing a movie in the franchise.

With those big names, it’s no wonder that the studio is looking at Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnorak and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say Waititi “has been approached to develop a Star Wars movie.” They report that “it is unclear where things stand” in regards to their discussions or if it’s a separate movie to Feige’s Star Wars project.

The outlet also poses the question: Could The Mandalorian act as a “training ground” for potential directors? They note that Deborah Chow, who directed two episodes of the breakout Disney+ series, is now the sole director for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming to Disney+. Waititi directed the season finale, “Chapter 8: Redemption.”

Waititi neither confirmed nor denied these “Rumours”

How is Waititi handling this alleged “courtship”? By tweeting out a picture of the album art for Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours. The Hollywood Reporter typically has reliable sources, so it’s unclear if Waititi’s future involvement in Star Wars is just a rumor, like he’s supposedly implying with the tweet. Or if he’s pulling our legs, which wouldn’t be out of the question for Waititi.

Whatever the case, he is a pretty strong candidate for a movie in this franchise. He, of course, he can do a big film along these lines, having worked on one, soon-to-be two, Marvel films. Plus, the Academy Awards just gave his film Jojo Rabbit six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Waititi absolutely loves his character, IG-11

Outside of directing for Star Wars, Waititi is very familiar with the acting side as well. He voiced the hunter droid IG-11, which was then converted to a nanny bot by Kuiil. “I love the idea that this droid has an amazing arc throughout the series,” he told Variety in November. “It’s an interesting character. He becomes a very lovable character.”

He even joked to The Wrap that he wants the character back next season, somehow. “I feel we just need to start a petition because I think that character, really, he held up the entire season, didn’t he?” Waititi said in January. “From episode one all the way through, he was the hero.”

No matter what happens in the future for Waititi and the galaxy far, far away, we’ll always have IG-11.
