The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards rocked the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 6 this year. Ricky Gervais, the offensive-on-purpose comedian, hosted the show; and he was just one of many British actors, writers, and producers to stand on the Golden Globes stage in 2020. Several of the night’s awards went to our talented friends across the pond. But how hard did the Brits dominate–and how did their haul compare to the number of American winners? It’s not a competition, obviously–but sometimes it’s fun to duke it out with our centuries-old Revolutionary rival, right?
From hosts to winners, The 2020 Golden Globes experienced a British Invasion
It seems like British TV shows and actors are springing up in popularity in the United States more than ever. Celebrities on Twitter and friends in coffee shops can’t stop raving about Fleabag. And actors like Olivia Colman, Brian Cox, and Jared Harris are becoming household names after their work in The Crown, Succession, and Chernobyl, respectively.
This year, the Golden Globes cashed in on the craze. Over the course of the night, ten awards went to nominees that had a majority-British production team. Out of twenty-five total statues, that’s a whopping 40%.
Several of the wins at the 77th Annual Awards show broke with predictions
One of the first awards was snagged by Succession, a show chock full of British actors (Matthew McFadyen, Sarah Snook, and Brian Cox to name a few). Jesse Armstrong, the show creator, is also from jolly old England. Succession, HBO’s dark comedy about the trials and tribulations of the vile rich, won Best Television Series – Drama. Cox, a legend of stage and screen, was the winner of Best Performance by an Actor in a television drama for his role as Logan Roy.
Another British favorite, Olivia Colman, is famous for roles in The Favourite, Broadchurch, and Fleabag). She took the stage to accept her Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In a Television Series – Drama. Colman portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s epic drama about the English royal family, The Crown.
Not to be outdone, brand-new WWI film 1917 took the top prize: Best Motion Picture in the drama category. The director Sam Mendes won the Globe for directing, too.
2019 favorites ‘Fleabag’ and ‘Chernobyl’ also took home some Golden Globes
After cleaning up at the Emmys in 2019, Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is still adding to her award collection. The 2020 Golden Globes will most likely be the final award show to honor Fleabag, as Waller-Bridge has confirmed there will not be a season 3 of the critically-acclaimed series. Waller-Bridge won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Fleabag the show won for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
Kingsman cutie Taron Egerton took home a shiny statue for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, too. Egerton starred in 2019’s Rocketman as music legend Elton John. The 72-year-old singer was visibly delighted to see Egerton win the Golden Globe.
Sir John and his partner Bernie Tapuin also won big; their song “I’m Gonna Love Me Tonight” from Rocketman snagged the Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
Chernobyl, a show about the Soviet Union that is mysteriously dominated by British accents, won big at the Golden Globes this year, too. Craig Mazin’s detailed, gritty drama won for Best Television Limited Series. One of the stars of the nuclear disaster series, Stellan Skarsgard, took home a Golden Globe as well (although he’s Swedish).
Did the British beat the Americans at the Golden Globes in 2020?
At 40%, the Brits put up a good effort. However, there were eleven American winners at the 77th Golden Globes. Joaquin Phoenix. Patricia Arquette, Ramy Youssef, Renée Zellweger, Michelle Williams, Quentin Tarantino, Awkwafina, Laura Dern, Brad Pitt, the American producers of animated film Missing Link, and the team behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood all received statues. Out of twenty-five, that makes up 44% of all of the awards. You can start chanting “U.S.A.” now.
