The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Mike Flanagan adapting The Midnight Club

Mike Flanagan has become one of the most sought-after storytellers in the horror genre over the past seven years and after a successful four years with Netflix, he’s continuing his creative partnership by developing an adaptation of The Midnight Club for the streaming service, according to Variety.

The book, written by Christopher Pike and published in 1994, is set in Rotterdam Home, a hospice for terminally ill teenagers where a group of patients begin to gather together at midnight to share scary stories. The group makes a pact that whichever of them dies first will contact the others from beyond the grave.

Flanagan is set to adapt the series alongside Leah Fong, who is currently a writer on the highly-anticipated The Haunting of Bly Manor, the follow-up to the 41-year-old writer/director’s adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House.

Fong is set to executive produce the series alongside Julia Bicknell and Flanagan through his banner Intrepid Pictures, which has an overall creative deal with the streaming service, with Trevor Macy. Sources report that the show may even incorporate other novels from Pike’s bibliography.

Flanagan first began his work with Netflix in the 2016 slasher horror Hush and continued with 2016’s Before I Wake, which was acquired by the streaming service after Relativity Media filed for bankruptcy, 2017’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel Gerald’s Game and Hill House. He is currently working on post-production for the buzzed-about Bly Manor, which currently waiting to continue production on Midnight Mass following the passing of the global pandemic.
