Caution Advised When Acting as Surety in Court
Quadri Yakubu, a Nigerian citizen, has shared a warning regarding the risks of serving as surety for others in court.
This advice comes after an experience he had on Tuesday, when a relative for whom he acted as surety disappeared during an ongoing court case in Abuja.
Yakubu expressed his concern about nearly being taken into custody when the case proceeded and the individual was absent. “Earlier this year in April, I agreed to be a surety for a relative in the FCT whom I don’t know very well. Unfortunately, this person fled while the case was still pending!”
“When the case was heard yesterday, I was nearly detained, but thankfully, with the help of an excellent lawyer and supportive friends, we managed to resolve the matter outside of court, and the case was eventually dismissed.”
He concludes by stressing the importance of being cautious about who you stand for as a surety in court, as it can lead to significant trouble.
