Once upon a time, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were inseparable, a friendship that began on the set of Barney and Friends in 2002 and included Disney’s Princess Protection Program in 2009. But once Gomez became tight with musician Taylor Swift, their relationship appeared to go downhill, and in 2010, Lovato told a fan to “ask Taylor” when questioned about the status of their friendship.
It’s unclear what happened between the two, although Gomez did allude to Lovato’s addiction in an interview. “She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing,” she told Seventeen in 2014. “I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now.”
Cut to 2020. Although the former pals don’t appear to be BFFs like before, the love they have for one another hasn’t faded. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them, Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar. “But I’m not friends with her … I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
Gomez echoed this sentiment in an interview after Lovato’s apparent overdose, telling Elle, “I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing … I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven.”
