There No Such Thing as Redemption For Kylo Ren, According to Adam Driver

One of the most popular characters from the sequel trilogy of Star Wars is Kylo Ren. The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben turned to the Dark Side and fully leaned into his grandfather’s crimes of passion. Of course, Anakin finally reconciled in his last moments in Return of The Jedi, but Kylo Ren still chose to follow Snoke.

It’s very obvious that he’s conflicted, maybe even more so than Anakin was. But after committing so many murders and being a leader for the First Order, you’d expect there needs to be some type of redemption or reconciliation for Kylo Ren if he wants to change his ways. But according to Adam Driver, his character doesn’t have anything to be redeemed for.

Is redemption possible for Kylo Ren?

Just to start off the list of bad things Kylo Ren has done: he killed his own father Han Solo, he works for the Dark Side, and he is the reason the new Jedi temple and Order fell. Not to mention he killed other Jedi to do so.

But when Entertainment Weekly asked Driver about all this, his response was, “What does he have to be redeemed for?” An interesting take, but a lot of Kylo Ren fans would stand up for their favorite character as well.

But Driver explained that what the world sees as wrongdoings in need of reconciliation, Kylo might not. “[Kylo Ren] has a different identity, a different definition of what redemption is,” Driver explained. “He’s already been redeemed in his story. I don’t think there is a thought of redemption. He doesn’t have an outside lens of the events, you know — you know what I mean? That’s more of an outsider’s view of his world.”

After watching the most recent movies, it seems like this tale is turning towards one of atonement, if Kylo Ren moves away from the Dark Side, that is. But that’s not the case in Kylo Ren’s eyes.

Will Kylo Ren turn to the Light Side?

Of course, it’s hard to say what will happen in an upcoming movie. Considering this quote from Driver, the Light Side might not be the place for Kylo Ren. There are so many theories, especially about Rey turning to the Dark Side thanks to the trailers. Plus, Kylo said he sensed that from her in The Last Jedi. But Rey also said she saw the opposite happening for Ben, so it could go either way.

However, just like Padmé sensed Anakin’s good up until her death, Leia sensed it in Ben. Anakin finally came back, even if it was as he lay dying in Luke’s arms. So it’s possible that Ben Solo will make a return, in a big, heroic manner.

Kylo Ren and Rey will have a final showdown in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

Because of their warring, but close, relationship in the films, Kylo Ren and Rey will have a major showdown in this finale. Director J.J. Abrams said they were “two sides of the same coin” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Because of Rey and Kylo’s complex dynamic, they’re closely connected. “Even when they’re not together they still haunt each other in a way — they know they are each other’s unresolved business,” Abrams said.

In the same article, Driver notes that their relationship can’t really be defined, despite fans shipping Reylo, or sensing any type of romantic tension. “I don’t think it’s all one thing,” he said. “Part of the fun of playing it is the boundaries of it keep changing. At times it’s more intimate, sometimes less intimate. Sometimes it’s codependent. And then it’s, obviously, adversarial.”

So regardless of whether you’re team Reylo or just team Kylo Ren, the final Star Wars film in the Skywalker saga should excite.
