It was an incredible year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With three amazing films, the launch of Disney+, and a promotion for president Kevin Feige which means a shift in the Marvel TV world, a lot has happened. Here’s a look at the most notable events.
‘Captain Marvel’ marks a long-awaited milestone
Marvel started off the year strong with the March 8, 2019 release of Captain Marvel. The first female-led solo flick in the MCU was a long time coming, and there were even some who believed that one wouldn’t succeed. But naturally, they were proven wrong.
Captain Marvel took fans back to the year 1995 when Carol Danvers landed back on Earth and discovered her true identity. We saw the makings to the strongest hero in the entire MCU (seriously, it’s been proven), and the film brought in over $1 billion at the box office worldwide.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ breaks every record
Captain Marvel brought with it the last piece of the puzzle necessary for Avengers: Endgame to come together. And on April 26, 2019, fans finally got to see the Infinity Saga come to a close as the mightiest heroes from Earth (and beyond) banded together to reverse the effects of Thanos’ decimation in Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel obviously knew that they had a hit on their hands with the follow-up movie. What the company didn’t realize was just how big of a success it would be. Endgame made almost 2.8 billion at the box office, surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
‘Spider-Man’ leaves — and comes back — to the MCU
There was only one film left in 2019, the decade, and Phase 3. Spider-Man: Far From Home saw the hero, reinstated on Earth five years later, trying to get back to normal while having to fill in for his now-deceased mentor, Tony Stark. But that was far from the only struggle the web-slinger would face.
In Aug. 2019, it was revealed that Marvel and Sony (which owns the rights to the character) couldn’t reach an agreement to allow Spider-Man to stay in the MCU. After a lot of back and forth (and some help from star Tom Holland), a deal was agreed upon, and Spidey will return for one more solo flick and make (at least) one more Marvel cameo.
These movies (and TV shows) were announced
Just as Phase 4 was finished, Marvel was ready to announce a whole host of new projects. First, at San Diego Comic-Con, seven movies were announced: Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther, and Blade.
Additionally, multiple Disney+ series, which are considered a part of the MCU, were announced: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye, and What If…? At D23 in August, we received word of three more series in works: Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk. Phases 4 and 5 are looking exciting!
The first ‘Black Widow’ trailer takes our breath away
All of the above projects have fans pumped. But few have been as long-discussed as Black Widow. The heroine, who was introduced in the MCU way back in 2010’s Iron Man 2, has had to wait a long time to get her own movie. But it’s finally almost here.
The first teaser trailer for Black Widow was released on Dec. 2, 2019 — check it out above. It’s chockful of amazing moments for the character and teases a look into her past like we’ve never seen. The year is ending with one of the most exciting trailers in MCU history, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
