Tinubu Rejects NDLEA Amendment Bill: Urgent Fallout Ahead

President Tinubu Declines Assent to NDLEA Amendment Bill (via Primetweets)
President Tinubu referenced Section 58, Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution, stating that signing the bill would violate these constitutional provisions.

President Bola Tinubu has declined to sign the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Amendment Bill, 2025.

This bill was recently approved by the National Assembly.

It seeks to allow the NDLEA to keep part of the earnings from drug-related offenses, which goes against the current legal structure.

This decision was shared with the House of Representatives during Thursday’s plenary session, as announced by the Speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas.

President Tinubu emphasized that, according to Section 58, Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution, the bill, if enacted, would breach these provisions.

He noted that current laws require that all criminal proceeds be channeled into the Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account.

Furthermore, he mentioned that allocations to agencies involved in the recovery of such funds must be approved by the President with the consent of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.
