On Sunday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) responded to a meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State involving former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Cross River Governor Donald Duke.
The closed-door discussions focused on the political future of Nigeria, raising speculation about potential shifts leading up to the 2027 elections. This follows advocacy from the Secretary to the Government, Senator George Akume, promoting President Bola Tinubu’s reelection, claiming there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.”
Despite opposition parties expressing plans to challenge the APC, the ruling party remains steadfast.
Kwankwaso, Duke, and their associates met with Obasanjo, who has been a critic of Tinubu’s administration, particularly regarding issues of corruption and the country’s growing debt.
Following the meeting, Kwankwaso took to Facebook to share his thoughts, stating, “It was a pleasure to visit former President Olusegun Obasanjo with my friend Donald Duke and our team. We discussed crucial national matters concerning Nigeria’s political landscape. We are thankful for the warm welcome from Baba.”
In response, APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, characterized the meeting as trivial in relation to Tinubu’s government. He expressed respect for Obasanjo but claimed that in the current political arena, “Tinubu stands above them.”
He further remarked, “The grouping of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke does not pose any risk to Tinubu, as they all faced defeat in the prior elections.”
Ibrahim referenced Obasanjo’s previous endorsements of losing candidates, asserting that such gatherings would not threaten the APC’s administration: “Even if they convene endlessly, it won’t change their fate.”
As political events develop, the APC maintains its assurance in Tinubu’s leadership, reassuring supporters of its firm stance.
