Flood Incident Claims Life in Ibadan
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that one person has died due to flooding in the Joyce-B/Mobil area of Ibadan, with two others still unaccounted for.
NEMA South-West Coordinator, Kadir Olanrewaju, spoke to reporters during a damage assessment on Wednesday, following heavy rainfall that affected various neighborhoods in the Ibadan area, causing extensive property damage.
Olanrewaju emphasized that the flooding was exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems that could not handle the significant volume of rainwater. He noted that the floodwaters reached gate levels and warned that the area is prone to flash floods, which could lead to severe consequences if not properly managed soon.
“Residents should consider relocating, as another rain could lead to catastrophic flooding. The lower sections of many buildings and fences are already compromised,” he cautioned.
Local resident Mr. Solomon Agboro shared his experience, stating that the flood inundated his ground floor, forcing his family to seek refuge upstairs. He urged the government to improve drainage in the region.
Another resident, Oni Bishola, who has lived there for four years, reported that the flooding has occurred annually, but this incident was the most severe she has encountered. She lamented the loss of essential household items like appliances and furniture, calling upon local authorities and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for assistance in establishing proper drainage systems.
Additionally, it was noted that the fence of a building under construction near Calvary Heritage School in the Felele area collapsed due to the flooding. The front of the FCMB at Idi-Odo junction was also flooded, leading to traffic disruptions.
Several roads in the adjacent Ring Road area suffered considerable damage following the heavy rainfall.
