Tragic Attack Claims Lives of APC Leader and Three Others in Benue

Tragic Attack in Benue State Claims Four Lives

On Tuesday evening, gunmen believed to be armed herders attacked the Mbatsada communities within the Mbalom and Mbasombo council ward of Gwer East Local Government Area in Benue State, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including APC chieftain, Akaabo Johnson.

Witnesses reported that the assailants launched their assault around 4:35 PM, opening fire indiscriminately and leading to fatal casualties among the locals.

Timothy Adi, the Chairman of Gwer-East LGA, confirmed the incident in a phone call on Wednesday, describing the attack as unprovoked and lamenting the recurrence of violence in the area, with this being the second attack in just two weeks.

To enhance security and prevent further incidents, local authorities have dispatched security personnel to monitor the boundaries of the region.

Adi shared, “The remains of four individuals, including an elder from the APC, have been recovered and taken to St. Gregory Hospital morgue.”

He urged community members, especially the youth, to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviors to the proper authorities.

“We must stand united and resilient. This incident is unfortunate, but we refuse to let fear dominate us. Governor Alia is actively working to address and resolve these senseless attacks,” Adi added.

The chairman praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his swift response and the prompt relocation of security forces to manage the situation effectively.

Attempts to reach Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue Command, for further confirmation were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or texts during the time of this report.
