Tragic Death of Lafia Polytechnic Student Sparks Outrage

A student from Isa Mustapha Agwai Lafia Polytechnic, Timothy Achinya, who was studying mechanical engineering, has reportedly died due to torture by unknown military personnel.

This incident has triggered significant unrest within the student community, leading the Acting Rector, Dr. Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata, to pursue legal actions for justice.

Jacob John Mutuwa, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG), relayed the details surrounding the unfortunate event to the media in Lafia. According to him, the situation escalated after a fellow student, Samuel Ejembi, alerted soldiers about the suspected involvement of certain students in cult activities. Following this, military forces apprehended some students at an entertainment venue near the campus.

Mutuwa noted that both the informant and the accused were taken into custody by the military last Friday, and tragically, Achinya died as a result of alleged torture. His remains were brought to the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia.

The SUG leader commended the students for maintaining composure following this heartbreaking incident. Legal action has begun against those implicated, emphasizing the importance of peace during this tumultuous time.

In light of these events, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for urgent measures to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Comrade Daniel Friday Egga, the NANS Zone C Coordinator, urged the local government and community members to unite for the sake of Achinya’s family.

NANS has pointed fingers at some members of the 123 Special Force Battalion concerning the alleged murder, advocating for prompt action from military leadership.

The Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, has assured the public that an investigation will take place and updates will be shared as developments unfold.
