Transformer Theft and Vandalism: A Shocking Incident in Jos

Newly Installed Transformer Vandalised And Looted In Jos (via Primetweets)

Transformer Vandalism in Jos North

A recently installed transformer in the Rikkos Yarkasu area of Jos North, Plateau State, has been compromised by vandals shortly after its setup by the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) team.

This transformer was expected to improve the local power supply, but individuals took advantage of ongoing outages to damage and steal from it.

Community leader Shapiu Usman expressed his concerns, noting that the delay in activating the transformer by JED was a catalyst for the crime, especially given that residents have suffered prolonged power disruptions for eight months.

Engr. Kabiru Lawal, the regional manager for JED, blamed local “bad eggs” for the incident. He explained that the transformer, which is valued at N24 million, was provided to help enhance power delivery without the need for load shedding. He highlighted that the community had agreed to clear some of their financial obligations before the transformer could be connected, but their lack of payment led to the current situation.

“Vandalism of transformers has surged in Jos following recent power outages triggered by issues with the 330kV transmission line between Enugu and Benue,” he added.

According to recent reports from JED, there have been 80 cases of transformer vandalism within their operational area.
