Why Margot Robbie Thinks Her ‘Bombshell’ Character Will End Up With a Woman

Bombshell premiered on Dec. 13, 2019. In Bombshell, Margot Robbie plays Kayla Pospisil, a fictional composite character at the center of the movie’s real-life story line. During an interview with Variety, Robbie disclosed that she believes her character will end up with a woman after the film’s events.

Margot Robbie’s character is fictional in ‘Bombshell’

Bombshell covers the real-life sexual harassment allegations against Fox News founder, Roger Ailes. In Bombshell, Kayla is a conservative millennial who works at Fox. She starts out working on Gretchen Carlson’s team, and is later promoted to work for Bill O’Reilly. Most of all, Kayla dreams of being an anchor on Fox News.

Kayla’s primary story line involves Ailes, played by John Lithgow, sexually harassing and abusing her. In real life, Ailes resigned from Fox News after being sued for sexual harassment by Carlson.

A subplot in the movie involves Robbie’s character with Jess Carr, a fictional Fox News producer played by Kate McKinnon. The two become friends after Kayla is promoted to O’Reilly’s team with Jess.

Kayla is sexually fluid in the movie

When Jess and Kayla originally hit it off as friends, the two share a drunken hookup towards the beginning of the movie. Jess shares that she is a closeted lesbian, but also a closeted Democrat at Fox News. She has not one, but two Hillary Clinton posters which Kayla finds scandalous.

“My parents would be horrified if I went home with a Democrat,” Kayla says. When Jess presses her about her sexuality, Kayla denies being a lesbian.

“Oh, I’m not a lesbian,” she says nonchalantly.

Robbie told Variety recently that she had to work very hard to understand every aspect of Kayla, including the fact she was sexually fluid.

“She’s just slept with a woman!” Robbie told Variety. “I wanted to deliver that completely genuinely, not being ironic, not being sarcastic.”

The actress thinks her fictional character would end up with a woman

After Kayla and Jess sleep together the one time, the two remain friends while working together. At one point during the movie, Kayla is seen on a date with a man. Still, Robbie thinks Jess and Kayla would be a compelling couple onscreen.

“I secretly want a spinoff movie where Kayla and Jess go on a road trip with their opposing political views and their blossoming romance,” the actress said.

Robbie also said that “she sees Kayla as someone who ‘compartmentalizes’ her attraction to women.”

“And she is not going to acknowledge it until she’s 60,” Robbie added.

The actress also told Variety she thinks “Kayla will go on to have several marriages to men, and will have kids. But she has a clear picture in her mind of ‘the woman that she eventually leaves them for.’”

Margot Robbie told the ‘Bombshell’ director what she thought

Because Robbie dedicated so much time to understanding her character, she felt very invested in what would happen to Kayla after the movie. She was so invested, she passed along her theories to Bombshell‘s director, Jay Roach.

“Yeah! Jay was probably a little surprised, but entertained by that, I’m sure. I was like, ‘I know this doesn’t come into play in the movie, I just need to know what happens to Kayla,’” Robbie said.
