A Guide to Euro 2024 Tiebreak Rules and Qualification Process

Euro 2024 started with Germany facing Scotland in Munich on June 14. The tournament will run throughout the month as 24 teams compete for victory, aiming to reach the final in Berlin on July 14.

Advancing from the group stages is the initial challenge for teams aspiring to European glory. Six groups of four teams will battle it out, with the top two from each group progressing to the Round of 16, alongside the four best third-placed teams.

Determining Euro 2024 Groups in Case of a Tie

When teams finish with equal points at the end of the group stage, UEFA has outlined tiebreaker rules to resolve the situation:

  1. Outcome of head-to-head matches
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches
  4. Redefined head-to-head matches ranking if needed
  5. Overall group stage goal difference
  6. Overall group stage goals scored
  7. Penalty shootout if two teams drew in their final group game
  8. Disciplinary points total
  9. Position in European Qualifiers overall ranking (excluding hosts Germany)
