Defender Demands Quick Barcelona Exit as Deadline Approaches

Barcelona star set for summer exit after

Clement Lenglet has come back to Barcelona, not for summer training, but to finalize a situation that has lingered for far too long.

The French defender, who was on loan at Atletico Madrid for the whole last season, is eager to remain in the Spanish capital permanently this time.

The 29-year-old has flourished under Diego Simeone, making 34 appearances, contributing three goals and two assists, and establishing himself as a key player.

As noted by SPORT, Lenglet, who will celebrate his 30th birthday on June 17, just two days following the start of Atletico Madrid’s Club World Cup, wants clarity regarding his future before his loan period with Barcelona concludes on June 30. Without a new contract, he won’t be eligible for the later knockout stages.

Pressing for a resolution, he traveled to Barcelona this week to expedite discussions. He wishes to stay at Atletico and participate in the Club World Cup should Atletico progress to the knockout rounds, with the tournament running until mid-July.

Barcelona seeks resolution, Atletico aims for stability

Barcelona’s objectives are straightforward. The club is keen to let the defender depart.

Currently covering 75% of Lenglet’s wages and with a contract that extends until 2027, they are eager for him to move on, but their financial fair play constraints offer little room for flexibility.

The Catalan club is willing to facilitate his early exit, but only if some form of compensation is secured, particularly if he continues to play past June 30.

Ongoing discussions are taking place, and both sides recognize that the Club World Cup timeline provides limited flexibility.
