Diego Forlan Reflects on His Challenging First Steps in Professional Tennis

Diego Forlan opens up on losing pro tennis debut image

After retiring from professional football in 2019, Diego Forlan has recently transitioned to tennis. However, the 45-year-old faced a challenging beginning in his new sporting endeavor.

This year, Forlan achieved a doubles title on the ITF senior tour in Lima, but his first appearance at the Uruguay Open on the ATP Challenger Tour did not go as planned, as he was eliminated in the opening round.

Partnering with Argentine player Federico Coria, they were defeated in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, by Bolivian duo Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos, who compete just below the main ATP Tour level.

The match began with Forlan and Coria holding their serve, but they quickly fell behind as their opponents capitalized on their experience to secure the first set.

The situation did not improve in the second set, which ended in a brisk 49 minutes, despite a slightly closer scoreline.

Forlan Reflects on His Tennis Debut

Despite the outcome, Forlan expressed his satisfaction with the experience, noting the impressive fan turnout in Forlan football jerseys.

“I recognize my limits,” he stated after the match.

“I’m thankful for the chance to partner with Fede. Competing in these tournaments with an amateur isn’t easy for him.”

“I never even imagined this opportunity. It’s amazing to have played against professional athletes – it genuinely requires bravery.”

“I’ll take away some good volleys, a decent smash, and various forehands from our exchanges. Overall, I feel satisfied,” he added.

“The crowd was significant, which isn’t always seen in tennis.

“While I’m used to playing in front of 60,000 people in football, it’s different in tennis.”

“The atmosphere on this beloved court was fantastic; my friends and family were present.

“It was a memorable experience, and I truly enjoyed it. For a moment, I felt like a real tennis player.”
