Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lightheartedly proposed that journalists critical of his coaching should experience his job firsthand, as he navigates a challenging season start for the team.
Following a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Brentford that broke a month-long winless streak, Ten Hag attended a Football Writers’ Association event on Sunday, where he received recognition for last season’s FA Cup win.
Amidst the intense scrutiny, Ten Hag managed to keep a cheerful demeanor.
Ten Hag’s Playful Job Swap Suggestion
In his conversation with reporters, Ten Hag quipped, “Perhaps you [journalists] might want to switch with me for a fortnight. I’ll be enjoying a pleasant trip to Istanbul for a match against Fenerbahce.”
This was a nod to their upcoming Europa League match against Jose Mourinho’s team. Acknowledging the pressure from the media, Ten Hag remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.
He praised Marcus Rashford’s effort during the game against Brentford, noting: “You can appreciate Rashford’s talent.”
He continued, “He started with a fighting spirit. If we all bring that energy, we can become a team that competes for trophies.”
Despite recognizing United’s early challenges, Ten Hag expressed faith in a turnaround.
“We are aware of our rough start, yet we believe we are moving towards improvement,” he remarked.
He asked for patience, saying, “Let’s wait and see how the season concludes. I’m sure we’ll have reasons to celebrate next year.”
Now, United prepares to face Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in a critical Europa League match, aiming for their first win after two draws in their initial group-stage encounters.
