Liverpool Eyes £35m Target in Heated Clash with Man City

Liverpool set to rival Man City for £35m target as Arne Slot France trip revealed image

This summer, Liverpool has ramped up their transfer activity. They have already secured Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are reportedly eyeing Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez as potential additions to their squad.

Yet, the current champions of the Premier League aren’t stopping there. Reports suggest they could be in the market for a new striker and a midfielder this summer as they aim to defend their title and compete for the Champions League next season.

According to sources from The Athletic, Liverpool is intensifying their interest in Rayan Cherki, a midfielder from Olympic Lyon. Manager Arne Slot reportedly met with Cherki’s agents during his recent trip to southern France.

Cherki has also captured the attention of Manchester City in recent weeks. While other clubs are interested in the French talent, City views him as a long-term answer in midfield following Kevin de Bruyne’s exit.

Multiple reports indicate that City pulled back from pursuing Wirtz, believing it would be more beneficial to secure Cherki, who is available for €40 million. Lyon, facing financial challenges, is compelled to consider offers for him this summer.

Slot is said to have shortened his vacation last week to have in-person discussions with Cherki and his team.

Previously, Liverpool had also expressed interest in Cherki before significantly ramping up their pursuit of Wirtz. It will be intriguing to see if they maintain their efforts to land the French talent.

Cherki’s Thoughts on Links with Liverpool & Manchester City

Cherki distinguished himself as one of the standout players in Ligue 1 last season, contributing eight goals and 11 assists over 30 matches. He also provided four goals and eight assists across 12 appearances in the Europa League.

L’Equipe, Cherki discussed the possibility of adapting to the Premier League if he moves to Liverpool or City.

“I’m prepared for any system. I train hard every day to be ready, both physically and mentally,” Cherki stated. “Most importantly, I’m focused on making the right choice for my growth as both a player and a person.”

“Nothing is certain in football. I can say that I dedicated myself fully to OL, being a true Lyonnais and giving my all for my club,” he commented.

“I didn’t abandon ship when times were tough. I stayed and persevered. There were moments of laughter, tears, and fear, but as a man, you must stand firm. Even in hardship, you have to fight for your club.”

Despite Liverpool’s keen interest in the 21-year-old, City feels confident about securing him.
