Manchester United were hoping to bring back one of their own this summer. But Angel Gomes has decided to take a different route — one that keeps him in France instead of Old Trafford.
Gomes, once seen as a rising star at United’s academy, has chosen to join Marseille on a free transfer.
The 24-year-old midfielder had been linked with a return to Manchester, as well as moves to Arsenal, Tottenham, and West Ham. But it looks like Marseille have won the midfield battle, and the player’s heart.
After four seasons with Lille, Gomes is now set to sign a three-year deal with Marseille.
Formal steps of Angel Gomes’ move to Olympique Marseille are set to be resolved in the upcoming days.

His decision comes just weeks after announcing his departure from Lille, where he developed into a regular starter and even earned a call-up to the England national team.
Why Gomes picked Marseille over Man Utd?
The key to Gomes’ choice? Champions League football and a coach who believes in him.
Roberto De Zerbi, newly appointed at Marseille, appears to have played a big role in convincing the player to stay in France.
According to reports, Gomes was impressed by the club’s project under De Zerbi and the chance to compete at Europe’s top level.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are still figuring out their midfield puzzle. With Christian Eriksen leaving and doubts around Casemiro, a return for Gomes seemed to make sense.
A free transfer, a low-risk move, and a player already familiar with the club — it had all the right ingredients.
But as we’ve seen so often, football doesn’t always follow the script. And this time, the Red Devils were left without their happy ending.
Gomes summed up his time with LOSC Lille with a heartfelt message:
“After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it’s time for me to say goodbye… I always gave everything I had for the badge and for all of you. Lille will always have a special place in my heart.”
