Manchester United is set to make significant moves in the upcoming January transfer window, as new manager Ruben Amorim has been allocated budget for player acquisitions at Old Trafford.
At the beginning of 2024, Amorim has decisively turned down any propositions for star players from his former team, Sporting CP, prompting United to explore alternative options for strengthening their squad.
So far in the 2024/25 Premier League season, United has struggled offensively, scoring only 12 goals in 11 matches, placing them among the three least effective teams in front of goal. Therefore, bolstering the attack is likely to be a major priority for Amorim.
Reports from L’Equipe suggest that United may make a strategic bid for Christopher Nkunku, who has not featured prominently at Chelsea.
The French forward made a £52m ($67m) transfer to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain before the current season but encountered a setback due to a knee injury during preseason, affecting his initial performance in London.
Even though Nkunku returned to fitness at the beginning of 2024, the recent managerial change at Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca at the helm, has limited his playing time, as Maresca appears to have reservations about incorporating Nkunku into his setup.
His single Premier League start this season emphasizes Maresca’s selective approach in team management, leading to speculation that Nkunku may seek a transfer.
Though Nkunku’s contract extends until 2029, Chelsea may be hesitant to sell to a fellow Premier League club, posing a challenge for United to finalize a transfer.
Amorim might entice the 26-year-old by offering him a pivotal role in his new vision at Old Trafford, particularly highlighted by his scoring capabilities shown in the UEFA Conference League and EFL Cup when given opportunities by Maresca.
