Lionel Messi played a crucial role in Inter Miami’s 4-2 victory over CF Montreal in Major League Soccer, netting two goals and setting up another.
This win, achieved on May 28 at Chase Stadium, dashed their stretch without a victory. The Herons now find themselves sixth in the MLS standings with 26 points from 15 matches.
The recent lackluster performances from Inter Miami have prompted considerable criticism, particularly aimed at head coach Javier Mascherano, who has been at the helm since November of last year.
There have been rumors indicating that Inter Miami might be contemplating Mascherano’s removal, with Liga MX’s Club America boss Andre Jardine being cited as a possible successor.
Nevertheless, amidst these speculations, Mascherano remains hopeful about Inter Miami’s prospects in forthcoming matches after their success against Montreal.
Javier Mascherano’s Thoughts on Inter Miami
After the match, Mascherano expressed (as reported by GOAL) that his team ‘needed to end the negative spell’ and conveyed satisfaction with the result.
“The difficult times are behind us, and brighter days are ahead. We had to put an end to that bad run. I felt positive after the second half in Philadelphia—not only because we made a comeback but also given the quality of the opponent, who is battling for top spots in the conference. I’m happy with the result. The team performed as we know they can,” Mascherano noted.
In the first half, Mascherano had to adapt by making three substitutions due to injuries. Yet, he remained upbeat, praising his team’s ‘cohesion’ and resolve to face challenges.
“We need to evaluate Jordi’s condition. Ávila had an ankle issue, prompting us to take him off. It’s rare to face such a need for early changes. However, it reflects the unity and determination of this group. This is the right direction. Such experiences can strengthen a team over time,” Mascherano stated.
Inter Miami’s next match is against Columbus Crew on May 31 at Chase Stadium.
