Mascherano Urges Inter Miami to Rest Messi Due to Busy Schedule

Javier Mascherano claims Inter Miami

Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, achieved a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer on July 9, held at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

Messi’s two goals were crucial in this match, marking the Herons’ second win in the league following their elimination from the Club World Cup last month. They faced a heavy 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.

In their first match post-Club World Cup on June 5, Inter Miami played against CF Montreal, where Messi also netted two goals and assisted in a 4-1 win.

Despite Messi’s impressive performance, Inter Miami’s head coach Javier Mascherano emphasized the need to strategically give the 38-year-old some rest.

Coach’s Comments on Lionel Messi

Ahead of the match against the New England Revolution, there were speculations regarding Messi’s participation. In his post-match comments, Mascherano admitted he initially intended to rest Messi but felt compelled to keep him on the field after the opposing team scored.

He stated, “Our original plan was to rest him tonight. However, once New England scored, we felt the pressure and opted to keep him in the game. We need to identify the right time to provide him rest in upcoming matches,” according to GOAL.

Mascherano acknowledged that while Messi was expected to participate, he hoped for a situation that would allow for rotation.

He stressed the significance of giving Messi a break amidst the hectic match schedule, saying, “We were certain that Leo would play, but we hoped for a chance to rest him. Once New England scored, keeping him on seemed the best option. Yet, we definitely need to provide him with some downtime.”

This season, Messi has appeared in 15 MLS matches. The last time he was rested was during the game against FC Dallas on April 27.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient has played the full 90 minutes in 17 consecutive matches across all competitions for Inter Miami.

Next up, Messi and his team are set to face Nashville SC in their upcoming MLS match on July 12 at Chase Stadium.
