The partnership of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on the field started in 2014, during their time at Barcelona. After a period apart, they reunited at Inter Miami in 2024.
It seems that they are now expanding their collaboration beyond the field by cofounding a new club, Deportivo LSM.
This news was revealed in a social media video posted by Suarez, which included Messi. The Argentine superstar described this new venture as ‘extremely special’ (comments via MercoPress).
“It brings me joy and honor to be invited by you. This is a project you have nurtured for years, and being part of it with you means a lot,” Messi expressed.
Deportivo LSM is a budding fourth-tier Division D soccer club in Uruguay, with its name reflecting the initials of both footballers.
What is the timeline for Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez’s new club in competitions?
In the video announcement, Suarez and Messi outlined (comments via GOAL) their aspirations for the club, with Suarez stating,
“I have a deep love for Uruguayan football, having grown up with it. I want to provide opportunities and resources for young players. With this club, we aim to compete in the AUF (Uruguayan Football Federation), which is an exciting prospect for my family and me,” Suarez shared.
“This vision extends beyond ourselves; it’s about sharing with family and close allies. Our history together since childhood makes this project a fitting environment to convey our shared football philosophy,” Messi added.
Deportivo LSM is set to join the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) league structure beginning in 2026.
While Messi and Suarez boast impressive stats with 114 goal contributions across 297 matches and multiple titles, it will be interesting to see if their new initiative will mirror their athletic accomplishments.
