Messi’s Return to Newell’s Hinted Amid Miami Puzzle

Newell

Lionel Messi’s recent performances have been pivotal in helping Inter Miami end their winless run. Currently, the team sits in third place in the Major League Soccer standings, accumulating 29 points over 16 matches.

As Inter Miami prepares to compete in the Club World Cup next week, concerns continue to loom regarding Messi’s future with the team.

The 37-year-old superstar has a contract that is due to expire at the conclusion of this season. While club officials have indicated that a new deal will be finalized soon, no formal announcement has yet been issued.

Moreover, Messi’s ambiguous remarks regarding his future after a match on May 18, coupled with rumors linking him to various clubs, have added to the speculation.

In an intriguing development, Ignacio Astore, president of Messi’s former club Newell’s Old Boys, stated that the footballer ‘desires to return’ to Rosario.

Insights from Newell’s Old Boys’ president about Messi’s possible comeback

Messi was part of Newell’s Old Boys from 1995 until 2000 before his move to Barcelona’s youth academy. In an interview with TyC Sports, Astore noted that even though he hasn’t personally spoken to Messi, he recognizes the star’s fondness for the club and his willingness to return.

“It’s up to him to decide. I haven’t had a direct conversation with Messi. It’s not my place to approach him as it might create an uncomfortable situation. Perhaps he has contractual obligations, or feels it isn’t the right moment, or has family responsibilities… But I understand how much he values the club and wishes to come back,” he shared.

Astore also mentioned in another interview with Radio Con Vos (comments shared via GOAL) that Claudio Tapia, the president of the Argentine Football Association, is also advocating for Messi’s return to Argentine football.

“He’s constantly promoting this. Messi hasn’t claimed a Copa Argentina, a Copa Sudamericana, or a Libertadores yet, having already won all the other titles. Ultimately, the choice is his,” Astore remarked.

As it stands, Messi and Inter Miami are gearing up to face the Egyptian team Al Ahly in their opening game of the Club World Cup on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the legendary Barcelona player.
