Mourinho Identifies Key Flaw for Liverpool Target to Fix

This summer, Liverpool is actively searching for a new forward as Arne Slot strategizes for his title defense in the 2025/26 Premier League season.

The Dutch manager enjoyed a triumphant debut year on Merseyside, guiding the team to the championship, but he remains proactive in the transfer market.

Having already secured defensive players Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, Slot is also targeting Germany international Florian Wirtz for a prominent transfer.

The hefty investment of £116.5m for Wirtz has slightly strained Slot’s budget, prompting plans for multiple player departures in the weeks ahead.

Leading the anticipated exits is Darwin Nunez, especially following the departures of Caoimhin Kelleher and Jarell Quansah, while the futures of Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, and Ibrahima Konate remain uncertain.

Should Napoli make an offer for Nunez, Slot will need to find a suitable replacement; however, a move for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak appears to be off the table for now.

Although Slot has a strong admiration for the Swedish forward, Newcastle will likely demand a fee that surpasses Liverpool’s investment in Wirtz, making a record-breaking transfer improbable for the champions.

Two alternative targets have surfaced as Slot prepares to compete with Arsenal for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Huge Ekitike and maintains interest in Victor Osimhen.

Latest on Victor Osimhen transfer as Mourinho cautions Liverpool

Osimhen had an impressive loan spell from Napoli to Galatasaray last season, netting 37 goals in 41 matches, including 26 league goals that helped secure the Super Lig title for Okan Buruk’s team.

However, negotiations have stalled, as Galatasaray is hesitant to meet the £75m asking price while Osimhen is not inclined to consider a switch to Saudi Arabia.

The only offers presently coming from the Saudi Pro League are positioned to meet Napoli’s requirements, and they need to finalize a transfer with Nunez to facilitate a deal with Liverpool.

A potential agreement to exchange players – with additional funds for Osimhen – could resolve the current impasse, but Jose Mourinho has advised Slot to think twice about acquiring the 26-year-old based on his experiences at Roma and Fenerbahce.

“Osimhen is an exceptional talent. If I were at a club capable of investing £70-75m, I would acquire him,” he stated in an interview with HT Spor.

“I have no issues with Victor; we maintain a solid rapport. Whenever we play against each other, I communicate with him about his playing style, as I find his diving concerning.

“In our previous encounter between Roma and Napoli, I mentioned to him: ‘You are among the top two African players, along with [Mohamed] Salah, but your diving needs to stop.’

“His tendency to dive is my main concern, but he undeniably is a fantastic player.”
