Tottenham Hotspur is edging closer to securing their initial signing of the summer with new manager Thomas Frank at the helm, and it’s a player they know well.
French striker Mathys Tel, who played on loan at Spurs during the latter part of last season, is poised to finalize a permanent transfer.
Reports from Germany, particularly BILD, suggest that a deal with Bayern Munich is nearly agreed upon.
The 20-year-old had a somewhat uneven period in London after his January arrival, netting just three goals in 20 appearances, yet the club remains optimistic about his future.
With new head coach Thomas Frank already endorsing the acquisition, it’s clear he envisions a role for Tel next season.
While fans may have reservations about Tel’s goal tally, Spurs’ intent to make the move permanent indicates a long-term strategy. Sometimes, a small spark can ignite a greater flame.
Frank approves Tel as Spurs and Bayern finalize arrangements
Initially, Bayern and Spurs had struck a loan agreement that included a substantial €45 million buy option, which didn’t sit well with Tottenham.
This led to further discussions, and the final agreement is likely to be around €35 million, in addition to the €10 million already allocated for the loan—quite reasonable in today’s market.
Bayern will still profit from a player they initially acquired from Rennes for €20 million, while Spurs are eager for Tel to realize his potential. Thomas Frank, renowned for nurturing young talent, believes Tel is capable of thriving within his strategy.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director, recently acknowledged ongoing discussions without disclosing specifics. “Conversations are still in progress,” he noted, leaving much to speculation.
Tel is currently representing France at the Under-21 Euros, and by the time he returns, he could find himself with a new long-term club and a manager ready to welcome him.
