Tottenham Hotspur has announced their intention to challenge the seven-match ban imposed on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
The suspension, along with a £100,000 (about $126,190) fine and a requirement to participate in a face-to-face educational program, was the result of Bentancur making inappropriate remarks towards his teammate Son Heung-min.
Further details about the incident can be found here.
In their statement, Spurs acknowledged that while they agree Bentancur made a mistake, they feel the punishment was excessive.
“We can confirm that the club has appealed the length of Rodrigo Bentancur’s FA suspension issued earlier this week,” the statement noted.
“Although we accept the independent regulatory commission’s ruling, we contend that the punishment is too harsh.”
“Rodrigo will remain suspended from domestic matches while the appeal is ongoing, and the club will refrain from making further comments during this period.”
If the ban remains, Bentancur will be unavailable for domestic matches until Boxing Day, but he may still compete in Europa League games.
