Trent Alexander-Arnold, a lifelong fan and player of Liverpool who joined their academy at just six, has announced that his journey with the club is coming to an end.

The 26-year-old revealed on May 5 through a club release that he would part ways with Liverpool when his contract runs out at season’s end.

Having been frequently linked with Real Madrid, while he didn’t disclose his future plans immediately, it was widely anticipated that a transfer would be finalized soon. On May 30, the Spanish club announced that he had officially signed a six-year contract.

Both Liverpool and Real Madrid confirmed on May 30 that Alexander-Arnold will be wearing the Los Blancos jersey on a six-year deal.

As reported by sources like Fabrizio Romano, Madrid agreed to pay €10 million (£8.4m/$11.3m) to secure the player’s immediate transfer rather than waiting for his contract expiration. This allows him to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup with his new team.

“This has not been an easy decision; I’ve genuinely given it a lot of thought,” he expressed. “I’ve spent 20 years here, cherished every moment, and achieved my dreams.”

“After dedicating myself completely for two decades, I feel it’s time for a meaningful change, both as a player and a person. I believe this is the perfect moment to pursue that.”

David Ornstein from The Athletic detailed on March 25 that Real Madrid were in talks to secure Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer following extensive rumors. A report by the Mirror indicated on January 5 that Liverpool had made a new contract offer that matched Madrid’s earnings proposal of £300,000 ($373,00) weekly, equivalent to £78m ($98m) annually, but the Spanish side was believed to be willing to include a substantial signing bonus, akin to the magnificent £125m ($155m) offered to Kylian Mbappe last summer.

However, it’s suspected that salary wasn’t the core reason behind Alexander-Arnold’s choice. Unlike Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who extended their stays with Liverpool amid similar speculations, Alexander-Arnold seemed destined for a change, given his youth and eagerness for a new challenge. Real Madrid has actively sought a long-term successor for Dani Carvajal, who’s faced significant injuries, setting the stage for Alexander-Arnold to potentially be their first-choice right-back.

Furthermore, Alexander-Arnold’s bond with Jude Bellingham, a star at Madrid, has also been cited as a strong factor favoring his transfer should he leave Liverpool.
