Who, exactly, is Rey from ‘The Rise of Skywalker’?

Turns out, her parents weren’t “nobody” after all. Rey is actually the granddaughter of Palpatine, but, still holds the legacy of the Jedi on her shoulders. At the end of The Rise of Skywalker, this character decides to take Luke and Leia’s family name, becoming Rey Skywalker herself.

However, some viewers noticed out that Rey had more of a connection to Han, Leia, and Ben Solo. As a result, some fans on social media pointed out that she should’ve taken Ben’s last name.

“Honest to God, in our showing today there was a little boy sitting next to my husband that said ‘Rey Solo’ over and over and over after the old woman asked in the time before Rey says the line. I started crying. Good tears. For the first time in days,” one Twitter user said. “Kids get it.”

“Rey Solo would’ve made so much more sense. Han Solo was like a father figure to her. Leia Organa Solo trained her. Ben Solo was her literal soulmate. Not to mention (depressingly), now she’s alone. Solo. Rey Solo,” wrote another Twitter user.

Some Reylo fans wanted them to end up together — forever

Sure, Ben Solo will always be with Rey, but that’s just not the same. After saving Rey, Ben Solo and his mother, Princess Leia became one with the force, leaving some Reylo fans as heartbroken as Rey probably was.

“Ben Solo’s death is more tragic than Anakin’s because Anakin had a lot of people who loved him and remembered him as a hero, had time to make a family of his own and had children. Ben Solo was just a young man who didn’t have any time to live,” said one Twitter user.

“So you’re saying Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa all selflessly sacrificed their whole lives just so that Ben could live again for five whole minutes, smile, and kiss his love before immediately dying,” wrote another Twitter user.

Fans of Rey and Kylo were happy with ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

This story had it all. The Knights of Ren, moments with Carrie Fisher’s character Princess Leia, and Rey getting her own, awesome lightsaber. As illustrated by the movie’s score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Rise of Skywalker was predominately well-received by fans.

“The audience cheered when Han said ‘Kylo Ren is dead’ and Ben threw his lightsaber. The audience cheered when Ben was running to her on Exegol. The audience cheered when he fought the Knights of Ren,” said one Twitter user. “They cheered when they kissed and when he was smiling. Ben Solo is hope.”

The Rise of Skywalker is available in theaters. Other Star Wars movies are available on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+.
