The new trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 introduces some intriguing new characters, and shows some favorites returning. It also leaves fans with more questions, which may have to wait until June 5, 2020 to get the full answers. Still, it’s great to see Diana (Gal Gadot) show Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) around 1984, and meet Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) and Max Lord (Pedro Pascal).
The trailer shows lots of bullets and bracelets action in an ‘80s style mall, and Amazon action back on Themyscira. Here’s a breakdown of the latest trailer. The film opens June 5, 2020.
Chris Pine is back in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ but how?
The first glimpse of Steve Trevor is in the World War I photo on Diana’s table. That’s the very photo that introduced Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and her 2017 solo film showed the circumstances under which it was taken. Fortunately, the trailer didn’t tease Chris Pine’s return.
Pine and Gal Gadot share scenes together in the trailer. Their chemistry remains although it seems they’ve swapped places, with Diana now showing Trevor around the world of 1984 when he’s bee absent for decades. The trailer makes no mention of how Steve Trevor is back, or why he’s the same age he was when Diana Prince met him, but we’re just glad to see him.
Kristen Wiig has wild hair, but is she a wild animal?
Even before New Order’s “Blue Monday’ plays, the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer introduces its new female lead Kristen Wiig. Wiig plays Barbara Minerva and she looks like a very Kristen Wiig character at first with wild hair and jittery speech. She glams up later in the trailer but never dons full supervillain garb, not like Gal Gadot’s new golden costume.
Barbara Minerva is Cheetah in the DC comics. With seven months to go before Wonder Woman 1984 is in theaters, hopefully they are saving some good stuff for later trailers, or the film itself. Hopefully Kristen Wiig as a wild jungle cat is one of them!
Wonder Woman kicks butt to the Max Lord
Wonder Woman 1984 also introduces Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), a slick businessman selling the ‘80s materialistic dream, which seems to include the multilevel shopping mall in which a major Wonder Woman fight scene takes place.
‘80s yuppie businessmen made great villains in action movies of the 1980s, so Wonder Woman 1984 is a great chance for them to make a comeback. And get their faces smashed in by Wonder Woman. Since Pascal never shows his face on The Mandalorian, his face will have to be extra smug as Max Lord.
No more waiting for Gal Gadot
After Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman fans were waiting for Gadot. Well, Gal Gadot made an auspicious debut in her solo Wonder Woman film, if less so in the Justice League team up (maybe she had more to do in the Snyder Cut). By 1984, Gadot seems like she’s fully in charge of her super powers.
No Man’s Land was the best action scene in Wonder Woman. Seeing Wonder Woman leap over a truck flipping end over end during a highway chase may just top No Man’s Land. Those Amazon armies leaping from pillar to pillar and storming the beach are awesome too. June 5, 2020 can’t come soon enough to take us back to 1984!
