Godwin Emefiele’s Trial Adjourned Until October 22
The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, for alleged procurement fraud has been adjourned to October 22 by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.
Emefiele faces a 20-count amended charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for offenses including breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining money by false pretense during his tenure at the apex bank.
The allegations include forging a document related to foreign election observer missions and conferring unfair advantage on two companies during his time as CBN governor.
Specifically, Emefiele is accused of obtaining $6.2 million under false pretenses by misrepresenting a presidential directive.
Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the hearing until October 21 after the testimony of the 9th prosecution witness and scheduled a further hearing for July 8 to consider Emefiele’s application for the release of his passport for medical appointments.
During the proceedings, witnesses from Zenith Bank and a legal associate testified regarding Emefiele’s accounts and the incorporation of one of the companies involved in the case.
