A mother, Rafiat Sheriff, aged 40, and her seven-year-old daughter named Asisat, tragically lost their lives in a gas explosion that occurred at a residence on Church Street in Ibafo, Ogun State last weekend. The incident, which took place around 8:30 pm on a Saturday night, also left two others injured.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the tragic event, revealing that it happened when the mother instructed her daughter to prepare a meal and the young girl attempted to light the gas cylinder, causing a fatal explosion.

Just recently, over a hundred houses were destroyed in a cooking gas explosion in the Jamata area of Lokoja Local Government Area in Kogi State, causing significant property damage valued at millions of naira. Officials advised caution in handling cooking gas to prevent such incidents.

The Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources in Kogi State, Bashir Abubakar Gegu, expressed sadness over the destruction and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures when using gas. He assured affected individuals of government assistance for recovery and to resume business activities.

Shortly after the Kogi explosion news surfaced, there were reported explosions at the Dangote Group refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State. The cause of the fire outbreak was not immediately determined, prompting evacuation of workers from the affected area to allow fire service officials to contain the blaze.
