Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has given his reaction following the acknowledgment by the Nigerian army of the killing of a 16-year-old peaceful protester in Zaria.
Expressing his views, Atiku Abubakar called for a thorough investigation into other incidents of violence committed by security agencies during the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest.
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) praised the detention of the soldier responsible for the shooting of 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed in Zaria, Kaduna State, considering it a commendable action.
In a statement shared on Wednesday on his social media account, Atiku reiterated that the use of deadly force against peaceful protesters should not be sanctioned.
He stated, “I am encouraged by the acknowledgment made by the Nigerian Army concerning the tragic event that led to the death of a young protester. I also advocate for thorough investigations into other instances of violence carried out by the military, police, and other security agencies during these protests, with a focus on accountability.”
Atiku continued, “The decision to detain the soldier responsible for this regrettable incident is a praiseworthy step towards accountability and upholding the rule of law. I have consistently advised the service chiefs and military leaders that the use of deadly force against peaceful protesters should not be permitted.”
Highlighting the importance of accountability, he mentioned that the actions taken by the Nigerian Army in arresting and potentially prosecuting the soldier involved in the incident are in line with this crucial principle.
The former vice president emphasized that soldiers should not be sent to suppress civil disturbances.
“Even in times of conflict, it is vital to adhere to rules of engagement. Soldiers should not be dispatched to quell civil rights demonstrations,” he added.
