Local Government Elections in Kano Rescheduled
Due to a Supreme Court directive, the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has decided to reschedule the local government elections in the state.
The new date for the polls is now set for October 26th, 2024, as announced by Prof. Sani Lawan, the Chairman of KANSIEC.
Previously, the elections were planned for November 30th, 2024, but the Supreme Court’s deadline for the conduct of local government elections prompted the change.
Prof. Lawan explained that the decision to reschedule was made in alignment with the Supreme Court ruling and agreements between the States and Federal Governments regarding Local Government Financial Autonomy.
The Chairman emphasized the need for stakeholders’ understanding and cooperation with this new development.
Importance of Stakeholder Support
Prof. Lawan urged stakeholders to recognize the circumstances that led to the rescheduling of the local government elections and to provide the Commission with their full support and collaboration.
He highlighted the significance of complying with the Supreme Court’s directives and the agreements reached between the different levels of government regarding the autonomy of local government finances.
By moving the election date to October 26th, 2024, KANSIEC aims to adhere to the established deadlines and ensure a smooth and lawful electoral process.
