Tragic Flash Flood Devastates Village in Lao Cai: 15 Lives Lost and Over 100 Missing

Flash flood buries entire village in Lao Cai, 15 dead, over 100 missing

Destruction in Lang Nu Village After Catastrophic Flood

The village has suffered extensive damage, and search teams are diligently working to find survivors following the devastating flood.

Local officials report that rescue operations have successfully saved 10 individuals and retrieved 15 bodies since the flood occurred. However, over 100 villagers are still missing, with no information on their current status.

Residents have noted that this was the worst flood the area has ever faced. The intensity of the disaster has left many in shock.

Hoang Quoc Bao, the Party Secretary of Bao Yen District, has commented on the major challenges rescuers are encountering.

He expressed, “This area is very isolated, with all roads blocked and communication down.” The tough landscape and lack of access are greatly affecting rescue efforts.

Nguyen Van Nhat, the Vice Chairman of the Bao Yen District People’s Committee, mentioned that the numbers reported are not final, with more than a hundred people still unaccounted for. “We are working with provincial officials to enhance both search and rescue efforts,” he stated.

The disaster has divided the area into two parts, both with numerous homes affected. Rescuers are struggling considerably due to the challenging terrain and the widespread devastation, making it tough to find those still missing.

On the evening of September 10th, Trinh Xuan Truong, the Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People’s Committee, shared important information regarding the severe flash flood that impacted Lang Nu Village, located in Phuc Khanh Commune, Bao Yen District.

Chairman Truong declared, “This was a disastrous flash flood that caused extensive damage.” Lang Nu Village, housing 35 families and 128 people, has been entirely submerged. As of 6 p.m. today, 15 bodies have been recovered, and 30 individuals rescued, with many more still missing.

Following the disaster, provincial authorities promptly alerted the central government and Military Region 2 for additional support in rescue operations. A “four-on-the-spot” emergency response plan has been implemented, deploying all available personnel, including military and local volunteers, for survivor searches.

Chairman Truong also highlighted that the province has requested further assistance from Military Region 2 in the search for victims trapped by flood waters. However, the rescue efforts are significantly challenged due to the remote nature of the location, which is disconnected from main roads and communication lines.

Currently, Secretary Hoang Quoc Bao is actively present at the site, overseeing the ongoing rescue efforts.
