Vietnam’s Engagement at Upcoming Summits

On September 19, Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the Future Summit will focus on “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future.”

Simultaneously, the UN General Assembly’s high-level session will address the theme “Leaving No One Behind: Together for the Progress of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.” These initiatives aim to synchronize global efforts to tackle pressing challenges.

This diplomatic mission is significant as it marks General Secretary and President To Lam’s inaugural multilateral foreign engagement in his new role, affirming his presence in crucial global discussions.

The trip to the United States aligns with the first year of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the US, alongside the upcoming 30-year anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

This past year has seen numerous exchanges between Vietnamese and American high-level officials, fostering collaboration through new dialogue frameworks.

Progress has been evident in sectors such as security, defense, and high-tech education, including fields like semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Currently, Vietnam ranks as the 8th largest trading partner and the 6th largest goods supplier to the US within Asia. Both countries continue to work together within multilateral systems, addressing shared global concerns.

After his visit to the US, Mr. To Lam will make his first state visit to Cuba as the leader of Vietnam. This trip highlights the longstanding solidarity and friendship between the two nations, viewed as a valuable asset to both.

Vietnam and Cuba have nurtured their relationship for over sixty years, collaborating across various sectors, including rice supply, food production, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

Vietnam holds the position of Cuba’s second-largest trading partner in Asia and is the largest Asian investor within the region. Both countries provide mutual support in international arenas, particularly within the UN.

During the UN General Assembly’s high-level week, President To Lam is scheduled to deliver significant addresses at the Future Summit and the 79th UN General Assembly.

Additionally, he will engage in bilateral discussions with US leaders, congressional members, and various ministry heads.

In Cuba, President To Lam plans to confer with significant figures including First Secretary and President Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez, President of the Cuban National Assembly Esteban Lazo Hernandez, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz.

Hang noted that this mission occurs within the context of nearly fifty years of evolving relations between Vietnam and the UN, characterized by Vietnam’s active contributions to global peacekeeping, security, and sustainable development efforts. Vietnam has played vital roles within the UN, significantly influencing both regional and international collaborative initiatives.
