Judge Steps Down from Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Amid Court Disruption

Today, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has stepped aside from overseeing the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu faces charges of terrorism filed against him by the Nigerian government.

During the court session, Kanu expressed his lack of faith in Justice Nyako, leading to her decision to withdraw from the case.

Amid the proceedings, Kanu abruptly stood up and instructed his attorney, Aloy Ejimako, to sit down to speak directly to the court.

During this outburst, Kanu declared that he no longer trusted Justice Nyako and insisted that she recuse herself immediately.

Despite objections from federal prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo, who argued that the trial was proceeding correctly as per a Supreme Court ruling, Justice Nyako chose to step down.

The Judge expressed her preference for a different judge to take over the case and subsequently ordered the return of the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, for reassignment.

Currently, Kanu has been placed back in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
