Following Rodri’s injury that has ended his season, Manchester City is exploring potential midfield transfers for January.
The Spanish player, who underwent knee surgery, will not return this season, leaving a significant gap in Pep Guardiola’s midfield.
To fill in, experienced players like Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic, Rico Lewis, and Kalvin Phillips will step up. However, with Gundogan set to depart this summer, Guardiola may seek additional reinforcements in January.
Although Guardiola is cautious about mid-season acquisitions, two potential targets have been identified.
As reported by Football Insider, City is considering activating Martin Zubimendi’s €60m ($65.5m) release clause, especially since Liverpool is not pursuing the Basque midfielder.
The situation might be less complicated compared to a potential deal for Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella, who showcased his talent in a recent Champions League match against City.
According to the same source, City has made initial inquiries about the 27-year-old, but Inter is asking for $84m ($94m) for their star midfielder.
Additionally, Barella recently extended his contract with Inter until 2029, while Zubimendi is contracted with La Real until 2027.
