Akpabio Responds to Impeachment Allegations

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has addressed concerns regarding alleged impeachment efforts against him.

 

During a session on Wednesday, Akpabio refuted claims that Department of State Services (DSS) agents had occupied the National Assembly Complex in an attempt to thwart his impeachment.

 

He stated, “We are focused on our responsibilities here, unaware of the mischief unfolding behind us.”

 

Akpabio requested that the Senate Committee on Special Duties investigate the matter and present their findings to the Senate within 24 hours.

 

He emphasized, “This false news is directed to the committee on special duties, and I expect a report back within a day.”

 

He characterized the impeachment rumors as an attempt to discredit him and the Senate, alleging that the reports were intended to generate traffic for the media outlets that disseminated the information.

 

“This is what we contend with every day. Some use AI to manipulate stories and enhance viewership,” he added.

“I’ve heard that online platforms pay for high traffic, and those behind this misinformation must be profiting from it. It’s essential for the public to recognize this as complete nonsense,” Akpabio remarked.

 

He reassured that the Senate remains cohesive and stable.

 

“The chamber is stable, and impeachment is not on the table. (Senator) Kaka (Shehu), kindly investigate this matter and report back promptly,” he instructed.

 

In response, Kaka Shehu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, committed to examining the allegations and ensuring a timely report back to the Senate.

 

This marks the second instance of impeachment discussions involving Akpabio.

 

Shortly after the Senate’s inauguration, there were similar reports suggesting efforts to remove him from his position.

 

Allegations included his close alignment with President Tinubu, raising concerns that he might render the 10th National Assembly a mere extension of the presidency.

 

Critics have also pointed out that he should approach sensitive matters with more tact.

 

Nevertheless, no senators have confirmed the existence of a real impeachment plot against Akpabio.

 

Senate spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu dismissed these rumors, asserting that the Senate is united and that Akpabio’s removal is not feasible.
