Pep Guardiola chose not to comment on potential connections to the England managerial position and did not deny rumors of discussions with the Football Association.
This week, Thomas Tuchel was officially named as the future manager following Gareth Southgate, and the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain coach emphasized his ambition to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup after reaching two consecutive European Championship finals.
The Times indicated that the FA had approached Guardiola regarding the possibility of succeeding Southgate, especially since Guardiola’s contract with Manchester City is set to end this season.
When asked about the talks before City’s match against Wolves, Guardiola gave a notably vague reply.
“Thomas Tuchel is the manager,” he stated. “I extend my congratulations to the FA and Thomas for their significant roles. Given I have been here for nine years, I wish both of them the very best.”
Further pressed on whether he had communicated with the FA, Guardiola reiterated: “Thomas Tuchel is the manager. My focus is on leading Man City, which is the most crucial thing.”
The City boss shared more insight on the discussion regarding whether the England manager should be English.
Now in his ninth year at Manchester, Guardiola’s impact on English football has been profound, coinciding with success from other coaches like Jurgen Klopp, Antonio Conte, and Mikel Arteta.
Guardiola: Manager’s nationality shouldn’t matter
“One thing that is beyond our control is our place of birth,” Guardiola noted. “It’s not something we choose. It’s up to our parents, and nine months later we arrive. I couldn’t choose to be Catalan, just as you couldn’t choose to be English.”
“I completely understand the sentiment of wanting your national team managed by someone from your own country. However, when results are poor, an English manager could face severe criticism. The federation has opted for a foreign manager who is well-respected and talented, and I wish him the best.”
“There will always be differing opinions, but I want to support him entirely because he will represent your nation with great commitment and expertise. If he succeeds, he will be celebrated. If not, he will face backlash. But nationality shouldn’t be a factor.”
Guardiola added, “The federation believes he is the best choice for this transition, following the excellent work of Gareth Southgate.”
“While we often take pride in our backgrounds and education, the world is vast; we need to adopt an open mindset. I came to learn just as much as to share my own knowledge.”
