Liverpool’s Premier League Title Aspirations: What the Supercomputer Says After Thrilling Brighton Comeback

Liverpool

Liverpool is leading the Premier League standings by five points as they head into the international break in November.

They achieved a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, while Manchester City suffered their fourth consecutive defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, and Arsenal played to a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

This solid lead strengthens Liverpool’s position as serious contenders for the 2024/25 title, positioning them as the team to beat when league action resumes at the end of November.

The Sporting News provides a recap of Liverpool’s current standing following a significant round of weekend games, hinting at a potentially thrilling title fight.

Liverpool’s Title Prospects for the 2024/25 Season

As per predictions from the Opta supercomputer, Liverpool has a 58.3% chance of clinching the Premier League title for the 2024/25 season after their win against Aston Villa.

Manchester City sits in second place in these rankings, but the distance from Liverpool is growing, as Pep Guardiola faces the challenge of responding to four consecutive losses for the first time in his career.

In contrast, Arsenal’s chances have dropped below 5% after their draw with Chelsea, putting them nine points behind the leaders.

Opta’s predicted chances for winning the Premier League as of Sunday, Nov. 3.

Club 1st 2nd 3rd
Liverpool 58.3% 34.0% 7.0%
Man City 38.0% 48.0% 12.1%
Arsenal 3.5% 15.3% 55.1%
Chelsea 0.2% 1.7% 14.4%

Is a 2024/25 Title Win Possible for Liverpool?

While Manchester City is still a contender according to the supercomputer, Liverpool supporters are becoming increasingly optimistic.

The current data may not fully capture Manchester City’s struggles, mainly due to key absences like Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and the questionable summer transfer of Julian Alvarez. Pep Guardiola seems to be struggling to adapt to the influence of these pivotal players.

On the other hand, Liverpool is nearly at full strength, with key players performing well. Mohamed Salah, possibly in his final season at Anfield, remains exceptional, while newcomers Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai are hitting their stride. Arne Slot has fortified the defense while maintaining an attacking style, countering any concerns regarding Virgil van Dijk’s decline.

Meanwhile, Arsenal appears to be in a tough spot. While it was thought that Mikel Arteta could turn around the situation by addressing early disciplinary problems, progress has yet to materialize.

Standings updated after results on Sunday, November 3.
