The national costume showcase at Miss Universe 2024 was a stunning display, highlighting the stories and cultures of each contestant’s home country. This year’s outfits were impressive, featuring a wide range of themes that celebrated nature, heritage, and history.
Ky Duyen, representing Vietnam, dazzled in the Ngoc Diep Ky Nam outfit, designed by Dang Tran Tri with input from Nguyen Minh Cong. This costume drew inspiration from the Long Buom (Butterfly Parasol) of the Nguyen Dynasty, reflecting Vietnam’s rich artisan craftsmanship while showcasing the progress of its cultural identity in contemporary society.
Ky Duyen’s attire was a remarkable fusion of traditional elements and modern artistry, representing more than just fashion but as a confirmation of Vietnam’s cultural presence worldwide.
As with previous editions, the 2024 national costume segment showcased an impressive array of designs. Contestants drew from their countries’ natural and cultural symbols, with Bangladesh featuring the iconic Bengal tiger, Belgium honoring the elegant rhododendron, and Bulgaria highlighting the stunning rose. Brazil’s entry focused on its abundant mineral resources, showcasing the brilliance of diamonds and vibrant gemstones.
Spirituality and religion also played a role, with Cambodia presenting a costume inspired by a Khmer deity, Israel incorporating Jewish traditions with the Tallit prayer shawl, and the Philippines merging indigenous designs with elements of Christianity. Mexico’s “Daughter of the Sun God” attire comprised eight striking components that captured attention.
Several contestants opted for modern cultural references. Chile brought attention to the popular game show Wheel of Fortune, while Jamaica celebrated its vibrant dancehall music scene.
Ancient themes were likewise represented, with Peru paying homage to the Inca Empire with a Sun God Inti costume. Japan blended traditional kimono aesthetics with the modern art of roller-skating, and South Korea showcased the hanbok through a traditional dance performance.
