Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and renowned philanthropist, has revealed that his connections with Jeffrey Epstein significantly contributed to the end of his 27-year marriage to Melinda French Gates.
In an honest discussion with The Wall Street Journal and other platforms, Gates described his relationship with the convicted sex offender as “a major blunder.”
An Ill-Advised Relationship with Epstein
“Looking back, I regret ever spending time with him,” Gates shared with The Wall Street Journal. Initially, he sought to meet Epstein to explore joint ventures in global health philanthropy but now admits that the partnership yielded no positive results. “I consider my actions to be quite foolish,” he confessed.
Gates’ association with Epstein has faced criticism, not only for its questionable judgment but also for its involvement in a contentious incident in 2017.
Reports suggest that Epstein reportedly attempted to use knowledge of Gates’ extramarital affair with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova to coerce him into participating in a multi-billion dollar philanthropic fund that was backed by JPMorgan Chase. Epstein had been acquainted with Antonova since 2013 and had funded her attendance at a coding school.
After Epstein’s death in 2019 while under trial for sex trafficking, Gates indicated he became more careful in forming new connections.
Melinda Gates on the Marriage’s Collapse
Melinda French Gates has been vocal about how Epstein’s involvement affected their relationship. In a 2022 interview with CBS Mornings, she remarked, “I was not comfortable with him having meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, and I clearly expressed that.” She recounted her own brief encounter with Epstein, labeling him as “abhorrent” and “the embodiment of evil.”
This incident, among other issues in their marriage, ultimately culminated in their highly publicized divorce in 2021. Later, Gates admitted in an interview with The Times of London that the divorce was “the most regrettable mistake” and acknowledged the misery it caused them for at least two years.
A New Path Forward
Even after their split, the Gateses have managed to maintain a friendly relationship, effectively co-parenting their three children: Jennifer, 28; Rory, 25; and Phoebe, 22. Both have started new romantic relationships, with Melinda dating entrepreneur Philip Vaughn and Gates reportedly seeing Paula Hurd.
The repercussions of Gates’ association with Epstein serve as a poignant reminder of how personal and professional choices can have unforeseen impacts, even for someone as influential as he is.
