Brooke Shields, the stunning actress, recently shared some personal insights into her femininity in her upcoming memoir titled ‘Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman’.
Once celebrated as one of the most beautiful women in the 1980s, Shields discussed experiencing discomfort in her intimate area due to the length of her vaginal lips, which led to issues like bleeding and chafing since her teenage years.
As a remedy, her gynecologist suggested labiaplasty, and she found it rather unpleasant when he mentioned she would receive a “little bonus.”
Challenges with Intimate Health
Shields revealed that she had to fund the surgery herself, as her insurance deemed it a cosmetic procedure rather than a medical necessity.
“Naturally, insurance wouldn’t cover it since it’s labeled cosmetic, which is rather curious,” the 59-year-old actress remarked in an interview with Us Weekly. “Last I checked, I wasn’t trying to become a porn star,” she humorously added.
After the operation, during a follow-up with her Beverly Hills surgeon, she was informed that he had performed an additional procedure that she had not consented to.
Shields disclosed that the surgeon also conducted vaginal rejuvenation, aimed at “reducing the average diameter of the vagina, mainly influenced by sexual activity,” as defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Upon discovering this, she felt “perplexed,” describing it as an “irreversible… invasion,” and expressing feelings of personal violation.
“There was no indication that something needed to be tighter, smaller, or younger, especially not there,” she commented in her interview.
For quite a while, she kept the details of this invasive procedure from her husband, Chris Henchy, out of deep embarrassment.
Reflecting on this painful episode, she realized the importance of sharing her experiences with readers, even if they felt “too graphic or extensive.”
“To change our approach to women’s health, we need to confront uncomfortable yet significant issues. Shame can’t be an option anymore,” she asserted.
Hence, at this point in her career, she has committed to discussing the various challenges she’s faced, including the harrowing experience recounted in her 2023 documentary ‘Pretty Baby’, where she revealed a sexual assault by a Hollywood executive at age 20.
In reference to this situation, Shields shared with People in August of the subsequent year that her eldest daughter was already aware of the assault, while her younger daughter, Grier, expressed feeling “helpless” after learning that something terrible had happened to her mother.
