Australian actress and director Clare McCann has generated significant debate following her announcement of a crowdfunding effort to cryogenically preserve her son, Atreyu McCann, who tragically ended his life on Friday, May 23, at just 13 years old.
The campaign was launched on Sunday, May 25, via the GoFundMe platform, with a fundraising goal set at 300,000 Australian dollars (equivalent to slightly more than 195,000 US dollars). In her statement, McCann shared that the process of cryopreservation needs to occur within a week of Atreyu’s passing to maintain the prospect of future revival.
“If we miss this crucial timeline, we risk losing all chances of revival that science might offer in the future,” McCann stated. “This is about maintaining hope and seeking justice. I refuse to let my son’s tale fade away into silence.”
Clare McCann Speaks Out Against Harassment
McCann shared her experience of her son suffering from “terrible bullying” in school, a matter she consistently brought to the attention of the Australian education authorities with no action taken in return. “I pleaded with the school and the Department of Education and Children’s Services for assistance,” she reflected. “I possess medical documentation, psychologist evaluations, a formal PTSD diagnosis, and emails showing I consistently alerted them. But nothing occurred. And now, my beloved child is gone.”
In her message, the actress outlines that the donations will be utilized solely for the immediate preservation of her child’s remains, alongside costs for transportation, medical, and legal procedures associated with this process. Additionally, she intends to establish a trust in Atreyu‘s memory to honor and safeguard his legacy.
Additionally, Clare shared that any extra funds raised will go towards launching a nationwide initiative focused on anti-bullying education and reform. This also includes pursuing legal action against the organizations she claims let her son down. “I aspire to assist other families impacted by systemic negligence,” she remarked.
In a local media interview, Clare discussed her reasons for choosing cryogenics. She revealed that the concept was introduced to Atreyu when he was around six. “We had conversations about the afterlife and heaven, and when I mentioned cryogenics, he expressed interest,” she recounted. “We envisioned doing this together, side by side. He deserves an opportunity to live out the life he dreamed of.”
The public response has been mixed. While many are showing support and compassion, others are raising ethical concerns regarding the appeal for substantial financial contributions during a delicate period of mourning.
Concluding the message on the donations page, McCann urged: “Please assist us in preserving our cherished Atreyu and ensuring he receives the respect and future that was denied by his school. We have only seven days left. Please take action immediately.”
