George Clooney recently responded to a comment from former U.S. President and Republican candidate Donald Trump, stating that he would also withdraw from politics if Trump did, during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel‘s late-night talk show.
Back in July, Trump labeled Clooney a “fake movie actor” and suggested that the actor should abandon politics after Clooney wrote a letter urging President Joe Biden to step aside for re-election to aid in preventing a Republican win.
Trump remarked, “What does Clooney know about anything? He should leave politics and return to TV—his movies have never been successful!”
When Kimmel shared Trump’s comments with Clooney, the actor replied, “I’ll follow suit if he does. It would be a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”
Besides his acting career, Clooney is also recognized for his involvement in political issues. He supported Biden during his campaign and organized a significant fundraiser in Hollywood, but after the president’s poor showing in a debate against Trump last June, he called for Biden to resign.
When Biden announced in July his decision to not pursue re-election and favored Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, Clooney commended Biden’s choice and voiced his enthusiasm for Harris’s potential candidacy.
Biden is “once again saving democracy. We are all eager to do our utmost to back Vice President Harris in her groundbreaking endeavor,” he stated.
