Jaleel White Unveils an Embarrassing Quirk of His Iconic Character Steve Urkel

'Family Matters' star Jaleel White reveals awkward detail about Steve Urkel

From the iconic show Family Matters, actor Jaleel White has shared some unsettling experiences from his time on the popular 90s series.

Portraying the character of Steve Urkel from 1989 to 1998, White discusses in his memoir, “Growing Up Urkel“, how he was advised to switch to looser-fitting jeans to conceal his “bulge” as he grew older, according to the US Sun.

After the eighth season, as White was transitioning into his 20s, the show’s producers suggested he move away from his signature suspenders and tighter high-waisted pants due to his outgrowing the trademark attire.

Thoughts of Leaving Comedy

White contemplated stepping away from comedy numerous times, with the role of Urkel becoming increasingly difficult for him. He found himself aging out of the character’s distinctive look. Producers were beginning to tell him to wear different clothing to mask his physical changes.

He shared how they urged him to abandon the suspenders and alter his pants style, stating: “Let’s get rid of the braces. Lower his pants too,” adding the jeans had become a bit uncomfortable to wear due to his physique.

On another note, White mentioned that he did not receive a warm welcome from fellow cast members upon joining the series. “I didn’t see how I was trampling on anyone, I was taking the shine off anyone. It’s very important that I say this: I was not very well received in the cast, okay?” While expressing this sentiment, he emphasized the awareness of the other adults in the cast regarding the situation.

Over time, however, he began to forge friendships and a stronger connection with the cast as dynamics shifted.
