James Darren, a notable figure from the 1960s era who contributed to the surfing trend and starred alongside Sandra Dee in the popular film “Gidget,” passed away at the age of 88.
He peacefully died in a Los Angeles hospital, as confirmed by his son Jim Moret.
Initial plans for an aortic valve replacement were hindered as he was deemed too frail for the surgery. Moret expressed his belief that his father would overcome the situation due to his enduring cool demeanor.
Throughout his career, James Darren ventured into acting, singing, and directing for television series like “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Melrose Place.” He notably portrayed Officer Jim Corrigan in the TV show “T.J. Hooker” during the ’80s.
His role as Moondoggie in the 1959 film “Gidget” made him a heartthrob for young audiences. This movie centered around a spirited Southern Californian girl who finds love on the beach with the character Moondoggie.
After his success in “Gidget,” Darren ventured into music, releasing hit singles like “Goodbye Cruel World” and “Her Royal Majesty” that soared to the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His musical contributions extended to songs featured in various films.
Remaining the sole original cast member across two “Gidget” sequels, Darren’s career transitioned into adult-themed films as he moved away from teen-centric roles.
Despite a declining big-screen presence after the ’60s, Darren remained active on television, taking on diverse roles in popular shows like “The Love Boat” and “Hawaii Five-O.”
Following his acting career, Darren delved into directing, which led him to helm episodes for popular TV series like “Walker, Texas Ranger” and “Melrose Place.”
Born as James Ercolani in 1936, he hailed from South Philadelphia and exhibited a passion for entertainment from a young age, harboring dreams of fame inspired by local success stories like Eddie Fisher and Al Martino.
From humble beginnings, Darren rose to stardom after being scouted by a talent agent in New York and subsequently signed by Columbia Pictures.
His personal life saw marriages to Gloria and later Evy Norlund, with whom he had two sons. Additionally, he served as the godfather of Nancy Sinatra’s daughter, A.J. Lambert.
