Jennifer Garner’s Ben Affleck ‘issue’ persists amid ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ controversy

Jennifer Garner's Ben Affleck 'problem' continues amid 'Deadpool & Wolverine' controversy

Deadpool & Wolverine“, the third installment in the “Deadpool” superhero film series, is set to achieve a milestone by earning $1 billion at the box office. This success is a significant victory for Marvel Studios after a period of challenges. Fans were pleasantly surprised to see Jennifer Garner return as the superhero Elektra and witnessed Garner tossing a witty remark towards her ex-husband Ben Affleck.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy has addressed the comment, which emerges during a sensitive time for Affleck due to ongoing relationship issues with Jennifer Lopez. Levy has clarified whether Garner and Affleck had discussed the joke beforehand, and the answer may surprise fans and dedicated viewers.

Garner’s “daring move”

Within “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Ryan Reynolds‘ character Deadpool offers his sympathies to Garner’s Elektra for the demise of her Daredevil love interest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe… a role once portrayed by Affleck. Garner casually brushes off the remark and responds with “it’s fine“, a quip that immediately grabbed attention.

In an interview with “Happy Sad Confused” podcast host Josh Horowitz, Levy mentioned that the joke was not approved by Affleck but by Garner instead, though he did reach out to Affleck during production.

“I later spoke with Ben because … the end credits have this tribute reel to the legacy of Marvel movies, and so that gave us the occasion to speak to everyone because we needed and wanted everyone’s permission,” Levy explained.

Garner and Affleck’s relationship blossomed while filming “Daredevil” in 2003, leading to their marriage in 2005 following Affleck’s split with Lopez. The couple shares three children and maintains an amicable relationship, even after their divorce in 2018.

It remains uncertain whether Garner will make further appearances (and jokes) in the MCU, but her cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was always bound to be memorable due to her ties to Affleck.
